Property a 'better investment' than stocks and shares

Friday, September 19, 2008 - 20:00

Those people looking to make a sound investment in the problematic financial market should buy property, it has been stated. With the demise of the Lehman Brothers investment bank occurring earlier this week, Young Group property portfolio managers have argued that property is a much sounder investment than dabbling in stocks and shares. The group stated that property holds significant advantages in terms of its value and security, with house prices only deteriorating for five of the last 55 years, while the FTSE 100 index has failed to reach the dizzy heights hit in 1999.Another benefit of investing money, according to the group, is that a buyer cannot lose out on all their money overnight, as was the case for those who have purchased shares fairly recently in companies such as Lehman Brothers and Northern Rock.Chief executive of Young Group Neil Young said: "The attraction of property investment is not only that it is a tangible asset, appreciating over the long-term, but it is also easy to comprehend."Lehman Brothers had been an investment bank for 158 years before its collapse this week.
