Tenants given advice on how to get deposits back

Monday, October 6, 2008 - 11:00

With the credit crunch causing many people to keep a tighter rein on their finances, those who are renting may be throwing money away, it has been stated.According to mydeposits.co.uk, many tenants are failing to get all of their deposits back because of a failure to leave a property in the state desired by a landlord.A tenant should get all of their deposit back when their tenancy agreement comes to an end, but some are leaving their properties in an unsatisfactory state and landlords are thus holding some of the deposit to deal with the problem. Some 38 per cent of the disputes dealt with by the company revolve around cleaning costs, 11 per cent around damage in the property and four per cent to do with late payment of rent and bills.Simon Gordon, head of communications at mydeposits.co.uk, said the things tenants can do to get all their deposit are to "make sure the property is clean before handing the keys back to the landlord, look after the property and the furniture during your time there, pay rent on time and let the landlord know well in advance if it is going to be late and read the terms of the tenancy carefully and stick to what has been agreed".
